This is part of a simple shaft loom that was made in the late eighteenth century in Southeastern Pennsylvania and used there for over two hundred years. The warp beam held the warp, the threads that run lengthwise through the cloth, keeping them in order and under tension while the cloth was woven. The wooden gear at the end of this beam let the weaver advance the warp as needed.
